Causes of Shin Splints

Causes of shin splints are many, but primarily it could be said arising due to the muscle which supports the toe is  stressed or injured by work outs or sporting events like running.  Some athletes  over stride, and lands heavily on the heel with the full body weight being put on each foot strike.  So, causes of shin splints can be traced to overload on the connective tissues and the shinbone which is known to attach one’s muscles to the bone. This overload is very often caused by working our or excessive athletic activities which are classified as follows:

Sports which involve sudden pause and reaction in games like tennis or basketball

  • Running on a tilted or slanted surface
  • Running downhill non stop
  • Running in worn-out or improper footwear

First main problem, which may cause shin splints is the improper shoes. In case your running shoes are not giving sufficient of padding & you continue running for long, then eventually pounding is going to begin impacting your shin bones and knee.

Lots of runners go for miles more than they what should without even replacing the shoes, thus ensure that you keep close the tabs on date you bought your running shoes & how many miles that you have ran in them. Then, you must ensure that you never neglect shin splint stretches that you must be doing. In case you are not stretching regularly, then tendons & ligaments, which surround shin bone may become very tight & tense that will definitely cause pain & tenderness.

Causes of shin splints also corresponds to hard training continuing too fast or for too long with irregular pace. Care should be taken while returning back to training regime by athletes who have a history of a shin splint recently and they should try running   on   a   different   surface. Runs on beaches for a short span of time can help a lot as there is less impact and that would strengthen he muscles and tendons involved.. If beaches aren’t available then running   through   the   woods   or   on   an   athletic   track   can   be   a good Substitute. Warming up is also very important while treating the shin splint involving light run and stretching exercise as well as massaging with some heat in the area. Understanding the causes of shin splint thus helps in overcoming this painful injury and healing fast.
